Challenge Mode Guide | Everything is Crab

Challenges change constraints and rewards; Wild Wild World and Wounded come up often in community difficulty talk.

Practical use

  1. Use restrictions to decide which build hub matters.
  2. Vegan and pacifist clears are mindset shifts, not DPS checks.
  3. Do not assume normal-run achievements unlock inside Challenge mode unless the achievement specifically asks for a challenge; a June 12 Steam shiny thread is one more public example of challenge progress not counting for a normal achievement.
  4. Community posts suggest pacing challenge grinding around patches.

Choose a Challenge by its changed rule

Read the selected Challenge’s restriction before choosing Genetics or copying a normal Pressure build. Wounded changes the meaning of healing decisions; Harmless changes the damage plan; Unintelligent Design changes control over new acquisitions. A build name alone cannot explain whether its usual opening remains possible under those rules. Start with the part of the route the Challenge actually alters.

Keep the Challenge title with any completion note. The developer’s July 2 tracking explanation says to select a Challenge and then inspect the Genetics menu: ticks identify Genetics that have beaten that selected Challenge. A tick viewed there does not establish completion of every Challenge, and the highest Pressure shown in Codex Genetics is a separate record.

Check achievement eligibility individually

Challenges do not have one universal answer for ordinary achievements. Version 1.1 explicitly enabled Gotta Catch Them All and My Destiny during Challenges. That is evidence for those named shiny-encounter goals, not a blanket rule that every achievement is valid in every Challenge. Conversely, it would be wrong to exclude those two just because they are not Challenge-specific achievements.

Apply the same precision to mechanics. The 1.1 Wounded fix names Nutritious and random-stat Point of Interest healing. That correction does not mean that every interaction in every Challenge follows Wounded’s restrictions. If a normal build relies on an effect that a Challenge forbids or changes, inspect that exact effect before spending the attempt around it.

Prepare the attempt in a useful order

  1. Select the Challenge, then read its displayed rule. Identify whether it changes incoming danger, available choices, damage, healing or world conditions.
  2. Read the starting Genetic’s tooltip and check how it interacts with that rule. A familiar Genetic can still produce an unfamiliar opening when the mode changes.
  3. Name one immediate survival need and one way to satisfy the Challenge’s objective. Keep optional achievements separate so an extra goal does not silently change the run’s requirements.
  4. Check version-specific changes relevant to the plan. For example, a Burrow route should account for the 1.2 restriction on entering while Stunned rather than relying on it as an unconditional escape.
  5. After a clear, inspect the selected Challenge’s tick and any separate achievement result. Finishing at full health does not prove that no damage was taken earlier.

FAQ

Can I save a Challenge attempt?

Version 1.2 explicitly includes Challenges in mid-run saving. It records the current run rather than creating a collection of permanent checkpoints; another save or a new run replaces it. Evolution and Point of Interest choice screens are excluded from saving.

Must I complete a Challenge to unlock every older Evolution reward?

Check the current requirement. Version 1.1 moved several formerly Challenge-locked Evolutions to first Pressure clears. An old unlock guide may send you to a mode that is no longer required for that particular reward.

Is a successful player build guaranteed to work for me?

No. Use it to understand how a specific restriction was solved, then compare its version, starting options and actual acquired cards with yours. A victory report does not guarantee the same offer order.

Does every Challenge start in Grass?

The 1.1 announcement gives that starting rule specifically to Boss Rush. It separately describes more varied starting biomes at Pressure 6 and above. Do not extend a named mode’s starting condition to all Challenges or every regular Pressure run.
