The goal is ten uses in one run
Steam lists 10 uses of Moulting in a single run. The name 100 Coats does not mean 100 uses, and uses from separate runs do not combine. The listed condition does not specify a starting genetic or an Extinction level.
100 CoatsMoulting is an active ultimate
In the linked discussion, JimasaurusRex describes Moulting as an ultimate that grants random stat bonuses tied to Carcinisation. Its value comes from using it repeatedly; owning defensive evolutions alone does not complete the achievement.

Prepare the ability and its input
- If Moulting is still locked, check the unlock condition in your current Codex before planning the attempt. LocatedEagle232 and Prof_V point to Exoskeleton when seeking Moulting during a run.
- Once you obtain Moulting, equip it in the ultimate slot and check the binding on your input device. Do not assume a keyboard key from another player’s guide applies to your controls.
- Check that the ability is ready before trying to activate it. Count actual uses, not presses made while the ability is unavailable.
Make room for the next use
- Look for a clear position before activating Moulting; avoid beginning while you need to react to an approaching attack.
- Between uses, continue obtaining food and dealing with enemies. A functioning attack and a way to reposition help you keep the run going while waiting for the ability.
- Do not prolong a dangerous boss fight just to increase the counter. Prioritise surviving the fight, then look for the next workable opportunity.
Do not depend on an immediate Burrow
The official 1.1 notes state that players cannot enter a Burrow immediately after using Moulting. Choose your position before activating it and keep another way to move away from threats; standing beside a burrow is not an instant escape plan.
Growth in a player’s Extinction run
In the linked Extinction 7 post, frostape attributes frequent stat gains to Moulting, cooldown reductions and an unnamed evolution that rewards points of interest. Projectile Tongue and Jaws appear in the screenshots; the comments do not name every equipped ability. The author later reports still taking hits. This combination does not isolate Moulting’s contribution or establish invulnerability.
Read the player recordWhen to change the plan
- If Moulting never appears, continue with the abilities you have and leave this achievement for another run.
- If you are losing control of fights, solve that problem before trying another activation. Choosing a particular genetic cannot replace using Moulting ten times.
- Keep a simple tally for this run if you need one. Restart the tally when starting a new run.

Treat weather fixes and escape options separately
Version 1.2 fixed using Moulting during a Blizzard launching the player in the wind direction. That removes a particular movement bug; it is not a promise that activating in bad weather prevents damage. Choose a position from which you can continue moving when the activation is over. The 1.2 notes also prevent environment interactions, including entering burrows, while Stunned. Together with the earlier restriction on entering a Burrow immediately after Moulting, this makes the visible burrow only one part of an escape plan. Common counting and survival mistakes
Do not combine an unfinished tally from a previous run with the current one. Keep successful activations separate from times you pressed the input while the ultimate was unavailable. Also avoid treating the next use as more important than surviving the encounter: losing the run ends that opportunity to finish the same-run count. Source: Steam achievement conditions
FAQ
Do I have to enter Extinction to complete 100 Coats?
The Steam condition names ten uses in a single run, without requiring an Extinction level. The linked Extinction 7 account is a separate example of a player using Moulting during a longer run. It does not add Extinction 7 as an achievement prerequisite. Source: Steam achievement conditions Source: frostape’s Extinction account
Does the player’s growing health prove that Moulting alone makes me safe?
No. frostape describes Moulting together with cooldown reductions and an unnamed points-of-interest benefit, and later reports still taking hits. Those combined choices do not isolate the effect of Moulting or show that every activation is safe. Keep the attack, movement and food plan working between uses. Source: frostape’s Extinction account
Should I activate immediately whenever the ability becomes ready?
Readiness gives you an opportunity to use the ultimate, not a reason to ignore the encounter. If an attack is approaching or your only escape depends on entering a Burrow immediately, reposition first. The official Burrow restriction makes choosing the activation point a separate decision from counting the next use. Source: Official 1.1 notes
Sources and scope
Steam supplies the achievement condition; the patch supplies the Burrow restriction. Moulting’s growth role and the Extinction example are attributed to the linked player discussions.
